About Us

We are a local group of community members dedicated to defending the First Amendment right to read in our public schools and public libraries.

We believe that…

  • Books unite us.
  • Censorship divides us.
  • Free people read freely.
  • Libraries are for everyone.

The Douglas County FReadom Defenders were co-founded in May 2023 by local residents Jan and Jessica. Meg joined the organizer team in the fall of that year.

Jan and Jessica are librarians by trade. Although they have both previously worked at Douglas County Libraries, they actually didn’t meet until April 2023! Jan and Jessica shared mutual concern about the attacks against LGBTQ materials at the public library, and they soon organized a group of like-minded community members. Meg is a mom who is a frequent Storytime attendee and consumer of library resources and programming. She became an advocate for public libraries and schools when her family moved to Douglas County in 2021. She believes these public spaces are essential for a strong community and should be inclusive and representative of our diverse world.

When they aren’t busy fighting for the freedom to read, Jessica enjoys hiking, reading and drinking tea. Jan likes hiking, needle crafts, film festivals, and dachshunds. Meg enjoys gardening and running.
