Censorship in the USA

The freedom to read is under unprecedented attack on all levels – locally, statewide and nationally.

Dive Into the Data

In 2022, the American Library Association (ALA) recorded the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the number of challenges reported in 2021. 58% of the reported book challenges targeted books and materials in school libraries, classroom libraries or school curricula; 41% of book challenges targeted materials in public libraries.

Similarly, PEN America recorded 3,362 book bans during the 22-23 school year, an increase of 33% from the 21-22 school year. The overwhelming majority of book bans target works by and about people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals under the guise of “pornography” or “obscenity.”

Book Banning Isn’t Popular

Statistics show again and again that the overwhelming majority of Americans and parents oppose book banning. A recent national analysis of challenges filed during the 2021-2022 school year found that the majority of book challenges can be attributed to a very small number of people — 11 to be exact.

We are determined not to let this small but loud minority speak and decide for the majority in our community who defend the freedom to read.
